Why Paris Saint-Germain view Chelsea defender as a summer upgrade

Ivanovic

Unable to recruit anyone this winter, PSG are targetting a trio of Premier League right-backs, with Branislav Ivanovic top of the list.

During the winter transfer window, Paris Saint-Germain actively looked at bringing in a high-profile right-back due to the long-term injury ruling out Christophe Jallet.

The window came and went without Laurent Blanc adding to the position, but it doesn’t mean that Les Rouge-et-Bleu won’t be recruiting this summer. Various French media outlets, as well as the Daily Mail have reported that Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic is one of three Premier League defenders being targeted by the Parisian side.

PSG would like the 29-year-old to complete with current Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel for the right-back spot.

The rumours persist despite the 26-year-old impressing this year in his 17 league appearances, providing two assists in the league and four in this season’s Champions League. His club performances have seen him return to the Dutch national team after a two-year absence.

It was been van der Wiel’s attacking play that has impressed at the Parc des Princes this season, but there are still doubts over his ability to defend against the best sides in Europe. With PSG’s sights set on lifting the European Cup, Blanc may require a player of Ivanovic’s experience and defensive ability to lift this team to the next level.

The Serbian defender is currently tied into a contract that runs until June 2016, and reports from the London club suggest that he would rather sign an extension on his current deal, rather than make any move away from the Premier League. Jose Mourinho sees him as a perfect example to help bring through the younger members of his squad, and with 19-year-old Kurt Zouma set to join the side this summer, Ivanovic would be an ideal player to learn from.

If Blanc is unable to land Ivanovic’s signature, there are other options in England that the former France international coach has on his radar.

They come in the form of Manchester City’s Argentine defender Pablo Zabaleta, and former Lille right-back, Mathieu Debuchy. Zabaleta is 29-years-old and his current contract runs till 2017, Debuchy is a year younger, but his contract runs till 2018.

The Frenchman would seem the most likely to be interested in a move back to his homeland. His former teammate and best-friend Yohan Cabaye, made the move to PSG this winter, and it would certainly favour the Parisian club in reuniting the duo that won the French championship with Lille in 2011.

No matter how well Christophe Jallet recovers from his back injury, it is clear that PSG are looking to improve the quality of their squad. He could be just one of a number of players that are surplus to requirements this summer.
