RBS has announced the appointment of Les Matheson as CEO of its UK Retail Banking division.

Matheson has been acting Head of the Retail Bank since September, taking over the role on an interim basis after Ross McEwan became Group Chief Executive. Prior to this he was Managing Director for Products & Marketing across the retail bank. Les will become a member of the Group’s Executive Committee (ExCo).

McEwan, RBS Chief Executive, said:'Les has done a great job leading the retail bank over recent months, bringing a wealth of banking and customer experience to the role. I am delighted that the best candidate came from within our bank. Les has successfully driven through important changes to make RBS a much simpler and more effective bank for our customers. I look forward to working closely with him in the months and years ahead as we shape the future of this bank, and put the customer at the core of everything we do'.

Matheson said: 'I am delighted to be appointed to this role. Every day I am struck by the hard work and enthusiasm of our staff, and their commitment to do the right thing for customers. I look forward to leading the business through this next important phase, to build the best retail bank in the UK'.
