Manchester City latest: Another injury blow but good news for Fernandinho

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

In early team news for tomorrow evening, Manchester City will be without Matija Nastasic for the match against Sunderland.

The Blues are in desperate need of a victory after a recent wobble saw them lose to Chelsea and draw with Norwich City. But Manuel Pellegrini will have to do without the Serbian defender, along with Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero, Javi Garcia and Fernandinho, who all remain side-lined.

But there has been better news for the latter after he was called up to the Brazilian squad after a two-year absence.

With the World Cup in Fernandino’s homeland, the race for a spot in the hosts’ final squad is a tight one. But clearly Luiz Felipe Scolari has been impressed by the player’s form since his summer switch to the Etihad Stadium.

Despite currently being out with a thigh strain, he hopes to be back in less than two weeks and looks set for the friendly match against South Africa on March 5.

Back to tomorrow night’s match, with Sunderland boss Gus Poyet warning City to expect the unexpected in what will be a rehearsal for the League Cup final.

Speaking to ITV, the Black Cats boss said, “We are not a team that you can say you know what is going to happen. We are a quite unexpected team, so we will see.”

Pellegrini will have been paying close attention to the resurgence of Sunderland under Poyet, and he will be hoping not to make it a hat-trick of recent league disappointments.
