We recently ran a poll asking Manchester United fans to vote on who they wanted the club to target this summer to replace the outgoing Nemanja Vidic and the response was overwhelmingly in favour of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.
Just under 50% of those who took part urged the Premier League champions to go after the high profile German centre back, as David Moyes will have to fill a huge void in his back four over the summer.
United are going to lose an awful lot in terms of strength, presence and experience from their back four but the good news is they are in a competitive financial position where the club can invest big if Moyes wants to bring in a high profile centre back.
The money aspect isn’t the problem for United, the problem is they may not have Champions League football in the bank at the end of the season, something which could be a deal breaker for a defender like Hummels.
The two noteworthy alternatives to emerge from the results were Eliaquim Mangala (18%), heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, and Hummels’ teammate at Borussia Dortmund Neven Subotic (11%).
United are in a battle against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton for that top four place which could make or break a deal for any of the three names that drew large quantities of votes in the poll.
