Arsenal latest: Wenger defends Ozil but refuses to be drawn on striker rumours

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Emirates Stadium…

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called his side’s 5-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend “an accident”.

In an interview posted on the Guardian website, he added that his players were looking forward to redeeming themselves tomorrow evening against Manchester United after their less than impressive showing at Anfield.

Wenger has also been speaking about Mesut Ozil after the German’s recent dip in form and poor showing against the Reds.

Speaking to the BBC, the Frenchman said, “I wouldn’t like to put too much pressure on him because he has been a top-class player until now.

“He didn’t have the best of games on Saturday, but that can happen.

“He works very hard to adapt to the physical level of the Premier League and he is an exceptional player.”

You can be sure Ozil will be hoping to show just how exceptional when United visit the Emirates Stadium. But David Moyes' side have woes of their own to put behind them…if they can.

And finally, the Mirror reports that Wenger refused to be drawn when asked about the possible return of Robin van Persie.

Recent reports have linked the Dutchman to a return to North London but when questioned on them the Gunners boss is quoted as saying, “Look, I don’t think that is an ideal subject for us to treat today.”

When pressed, he reportedly added, “I think it is best we don’t talk about it at the moment.”

So could a shocking return really be on the cards? Only time will tell; for now, both sides will be focused solely on a vital three points.
