Who were the best midfielders over the weekend? Hazard, Gerrard and more

Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur stars all feature.

The weekend’s Premier League action produced some surprising results as Liverpool completely destroyed Arsenal at Anfield while Norwich City and Fulham picked up points in matches they were expected to lose.

There were some standout midfield performances over the weekend with stars from higher and lower profile clubs featuring. We’ve taken a look at the best performers across several areas.

Eden Hazard Chelsea MF 3 1 85

There were some great performances like Kevin Nolan for West Ham over the weekend but Chelsea’s Eden Hazard deserves a special mention. He bagged his first ever Premier League hat-trick and produced a world class performance which was too much for Newcastle to cope with.

Accurate Passes

Michael Carrick Man Utd MF 88 1 90
Mikel Arteta Arsenal MF 82 1 90
Leon Britton Swansea MF 73 1 90
Juan Mata Man Utd MF 72 1 90
Ashley Westwood Aston Villa MF 72 1 90

This is an interesting one because as accurate as Michael Carrick and Mikel Arteta were, they played in sides that produced disappointing performances over the weekend.

Duels Won

Nemanja Matic Chelsea MF 18 1 90
Mousa Dembélé Spurs MF 16 1 90
James McCarthy Everton MF 12 1 90
Jack Wilshere Arsenal MF 11 1 90
Philippe Coutinho Liverpool MF 10 1 90

In terms of duels against other players, no one won more than Chelsea’s Matic. He stopped Newcastle building fluency in Chelsea’s defensive third and the performance will do his confidence the world of good ahead of more important games.

Steven Gerrard Liverpool MF 6 1 76
Mousa Dembélé Spurs MF 5 1 90
Gary Medel Cardiff MF 5 1 90

Matic features again but it was Everton’s James McCarthy who won the most tackles over the weekend, in a losing cause as the Toffees went down 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur. McCarthy raced around the midfield, snapping at the heels of Tottenham’s more creative players.

Joe Ledley Crystal Palace MF 8 1 90
Mile Jedinak Crystal Palace MF 7 1 90
Gareth Barry Man City MF 5 1 90
Nabil Bentaleb Spurs MF 4 1 90
Gary Medel Cardiff MF 4 1 90

The Crystal Palace pair showed that they are starting to read the game very well and they allowed the London based side to keep the pressure up on West Brom. There was no let up and it shows they were always actively thinking over how to win possession back quickly.
