I know, you saw Sonic BOOM and you thought – Street Fighter, Guile! Well, you’re wrong but the blue hedgehog is back again.
Sonic the Hedgehog, the 23 year old spikey blue mammal that’s been speeding across our screens for so long, is coming back with a brand new look. SEGA announced a new direction for the Sonic franchise on Friday, Sonic BOOM. Planned as games for the Wii U and 3DS, Sonic BOOM is to be a prequel to an upcoming CG animated TV show of the same name.
Whilst the changes to the characters don’t make them unrecognisable, there are certainly some noticeable differences from their original looks – just take a look at Knuckles and his new roid-induced physique.
Whilst games developers can take their franchises any direction they see fit, the changes to the characters have unsurprisingly sparked fan backlash. Buy hey, that’s the internet for you. I’m all for it, and I think if it can re-invigorate the Sonic brand then it’s worth a shot.
Take a look at some of the early screenshots and concept art for the game below.
Tails - Is it a boy or girl... I never could tell.
Ah, running, back to it's roots!
I'm guessing, Greenhill Zone?
