Marco Branca left Inter by mutual consent at the end of last week after a chaotic January transfer window, which made his position untenable.
Branca had been part of Inter's staff for over a decade since hanging his boots up and was in charge of transfer policy amongst other roles.
But a botched deal that would've seen midfield star Fredy Guarin leave to rivals Juventus and Mirko Vucinic arrive in part exchange, was the final straw after recent disappointments in the market.
New owner Erik Thohir overturned the Guarin deal at the last minute following fan protests and even the late arrival of Lazio midfielder Hernanes didn't appease fans as Inter continue to struggle in Serie A.
Branca is reportedly close to Mourinho and has an even closer relationship with the Special One's agent after the pair worked together at Inter.
The arrival of Branca could have an interesting impact on Chelsea's transfer policy at the end of the season.
Colombian midfielder Guarin would become a likely target for Chelsea and links with Andrea Ranocchia could be reopened.
