Sir Alex Ferguson made some amazing signings and some befuddling ones. Bebe arguably heads the latter list.
Currently on loan at Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira, the 23-year-old striker-cum-winger is not having the worst of seasons, scoring three goals in the three league matches directly before Sunday’s match away to FC Porto.
Could Bebe make it four in a row – against the reigning champions of his homeland?
Well, no, he couldn’t, as Pacos lost 3-0 with Porto keeping up the pressure on current league leaders Benfica.
It means Bebe’s loan club is currently bottom of the Primeira Liga, but that did not stop them travelling to their illustrious opponents with the best intentions.
Speaking to O Jogo after the match, Bebe said, “We did our job and created chances to score, but we could not achieve them, unlike FC Porto, who scored three times.
“We came to win. We tried, we ran, but we were not successful. We were on top of the opponent when the penalty came, but then we dropped a bit.
“Now we forget this result and think about the next game.”
They are admirable intentions, and it seems Bebe is now growing into both a player and a leader of sorts.
Only time will tell if he can help his current club clear of the relegation zone before David Moyes rules on his own future.
