The transfer window may have closed, but the potential long-term destination of one Chelsea player remains a hot topic in Spain.
That is where Thibaut Courtois is currently playing on loan for Atletico Madrid – his time there seeing him blossom into one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
There have been contrasting reports over the Belgian stopper’s future, with some suggesting he will remain on loan in La Liga, others suggesting he will return to Stamford Bridge to duke it out with Petr Cech for a starting berth, and the latest claiming Real Madrid are planning a move that would no doubt leave their fierce domestic rivals fuming.
So what’s new?
Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial has published a story this morning claiming Courtois is a “priority for the future” of Atletico.
“In goal, no one can match the performance of Courtois,” the report adds, making it abundantly clear that the Chelsea loanee is a player that manager Diego Simeone is desperate to sign permanently.
But they add that “the economic position remains fragile” meaning it will take a considerable bid to tempt Jose Mourinho’s hand.
A world-record bid for a ‘keeper then? Surely not. But Atletico will have to dig deep to sign a player who has a Chelsea contract until 2016.
