United morning news: Rooney tipped for new role; six summer signings linked in major spree

Rooney Warm Up

A select round-up of news relating to Manchester United

The Mail on Sunday reports that Wayne Rooney is David Moyes’ preferred choice for Manchester United captain with the imminent departure of Nemanja Vidic.

The report claims that if the striker agrees a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, he will be handed the armband permanently, provided he understands the ambassadorial role that goes with such a title.

When asked specifically about the prospect of Rooney taking the role, Moyes is quoted as saying, “Like everyone else, I’ll give everyone that opportunity to stand up and show what they can do in the coming months.”

In truth, given the players likely to be at Old Trafford next season, Rooney does appear to be the most likely candidate for the job.

In transfer news, the Star on Sunday claims Moyes will go back to his old club in an attempt to bring Seamus Coleman to United, along with a move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw.

The combined fee for the two is touted at £45million.

But the Mail has a slightly different - and longer - list of potential arrivals, with Shaw joined by Juventus pair Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba, Atletico Madrid front-man Diego Costa and Ajax’s Joel Veltman.

The report claims Moyes will attempt to spend in the region of £100million this summer – although it will take considerably more than that to bag everyone on the list above.
