The French international striker has been a long-term target for Arsene Wenger, with Arsenal also linked with the player throughout the summer. Although a successful bid of some £27.5m was thought likely to be accepted, in the end, of course, Benzema stayed put.
Fortunately for Arsenal, however, it may still be possible for the club to acquire Benzema. The Frenchman is enjoying a productive season under Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, even though talks at the beginning of the season over a new deal came to nothing, leaving the club in an awkward position this summer with Benzema then having less than 12 months left on his current contract.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial dismissal away at Athletic Bilbao, and the Portuguese forward's three match suspension, has resulted in Benzema being given more responsibility at Real Madrid, and the 26-year-old is currently enjoying a hot streak – notching five goals in his last seven games.
Villarreal arrived at the Bernabeu on Saturday looking to end Los Blancos’ incredible 22 game unbeaten run. A Benzema-inspired Madrid, however, deflated the visitors as the hosts ran out 4-2 winners. And Benzema’s two goals helped the Frenchman to a Real Madrid landmark, as he equalled Brazilian legend Ronaldo’s incredible 104 goal haul.
Benzema achieved the landmark in 215 games, whereas Ronaldo reached 104 goals in just 177 games. It puts the Frenchman, however, joint 14th on the all-time list of Real Madrid goalscorers.
With the parties yet to resolve Benzema's contract uncertainty, perhaps Arsenal won't have a better opportunity to land their long-standing transfer target than this summer.
Should Arsenal make a move for Benzema in the summer ?
