Everton star: I am glad I turned Tottenham down

James McCarthy had the opportunity to move to White Hart Lane in the summer, but instead opted for the Merseyside club.

Everton travel to take on Tottenham today with three precious Premier League points on the line in the race for fourth place.

One of the stars behind a strong campaign for Roberto Martinez’s men has been James McCarthy, who followed the Spanish manager from Wigan in the summer.

The Republic of Ireland international had the option to sign for Spurs also, but has revealed that he is glad that he chose a switch to Merseyside.

“There was a lot of talk in the summer but I am really happy to be here," he told The Independent.

“It was here or Tottenham but I am enjoying life here. It was the attraction of this club and the gaffer, he was a big factor.

“He rang my agent and said he wanted to get the deal done and I was delighted to get here – it is a brilliant club to be at.

“We won’t get carried away. We’re not saying we are going to reach the Champions League.

“We want to do as well as we can and it is a decent start – so far so good.”

McCarthy is widely expected to start for the Toffees at White Hart Lane today.
