In what ended up being a day of goals from current Spurs loanees and former Spurs players, Giovani dos Santos scored arguably the best of the bunch with a peach of a free-kick away to Real Madrid.
Ronaldo-less Real, led by former Tottenham favourite Gareth Bale, emerged as 4-2 victors in what was at times a close game.
Bale opened the scoring. pouncing on an error from Villareal defender Jose Dorado before expertly dinking it over the onrushing goalkeeper. He then turned provider, crossing for Karim Benzema to double the lead.
The match then became closer as the two teams traded goals leaving the match poised at 3-1.
Up stepped former Barcelona man Giovani dos Santos to score an exquisite free kick over the wall from 25 yards and into the top corner past Diego Lopez's outstretched hand. Real would go on to score a fourth to leave the game 4-2 in their favour.
Adel Taarabt also scored for AC Milan on his debut, an awesome strike after dribbling for 30 yards and beating Jose Reina, though his new team went on to lose 3-1. While loanee Iago Falque scored two sensational goals as Rayo Vallecano beat Malaga 4-1. Alex Pritchard, on loan at Swindon, also scored a free kick in League 1 as his team ran out 3-2 winners over Port Vale.
All in all it was a pretty eventful day for followers of Spurs, who would still have been smiling from their rivals Arsenal's thrashing to Liverpool.
Let's hope there'll still be something to smile about after tomorrow's game against Everton, otherwise they might just wonder why they let all those goal-scorers leave White Hart Lane.
