The Saints led twice through Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis, but were twice pegged back, first by Peter Odemwingie and second by ex-Saint Peter Crouch.
Lambert scored the opening goal of the game in the 6th minute, after Charlie Adam handled an Adam Lallana cross from a short corner.
He stepped up and finished with aplomb, smashing a curling strike in off of the far post of Asmir Begovic's goal.
It was his 112th goal for Southampton in 219 games, as he continues to stake his claim for a place in Roy Hodgson's 23-man World Cup squad.
