Yaya Sanogo returned to competitive action for Arsenal for the first time in three months this afternoon as he started in the under-21 side taking on Southampton.
The 21-year-old was brought in by Arsene Wenger last summer from Auxerre, signing a long term contract in a deal which divided opinion among Arsenal fans.
The start to his Arsenal career was scrappy (nine minutes of Premier League football scrappy), as he struggled to break into the first team before he picked up a back injury while away on international duty with the French under-21 side.
His return couldn’t have come a moment too soon for Arsenal with the young forward providing an attacking back up option to Olivier Giroud, Nicklas Bendtner and Lukas Podolski as Arsenal enter their toughest period of the season.
Whether he’s used in upcoming games against the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City is doubtful but he provides an option for the club at a crucial time.
Fingers crossed his match sharpness and fitness picks up rapidly over the next week or two.
