Vidic made the announcement late on Thursday night that he would be seeking a new club in the summer, and as a result, the Red Devils will almost certainly be in the market for a centre back to replace him - but who could be on Moyes' shortlist?
The Porto man is also a target for Manchester City, with the Frenchman reportedly worth around €35m. There have been conflicting reports of late suggesting that United will either make Mangala a priority in the summer or completely abandon their interest in him. A physically imposing defender with outstanding aerial ability, Mangala would offer many of the attributes that have made Vidic such a success at Old Trafford. The price tag is huge, but so is Mangala's potential, and United should certainly consider the big outlay for such a talent.
Hummels would likely cost as much as, if not more than Mangala, but having established himself as one of the top centre backs in world football, the Germany international would certainly be worth the giant fee that Borussia Dortmund will command. Hummels is not only strong and positionally sound, but also outstanding in possession, with superb ball control and passing for a centre back. United would have to compete with La Liga giants Barcelona for his signature, but if Moyes is to adequately replace a pillar of United's recent success, he will have to challenge the best and pay accordingly.
Another Bundesliga defender who has recently been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Bayern Munich's Dante, with the Brazilian admitting that talks between the two clubs had taken place in the January transfer window. Vidic's experience will be sorely missed in the Manchester United backline, and adding 30-year-old Dante would be a valuable addition alongside relative youngsters Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, which would certainly help cushion the blow from Vidic's departure.
Manager David Moyes recently went on a scouting mission to Italy in order to watch Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio, but also Cagliari centre back Davide Astori. The former Milan centre half has been a star for the Serie A side in recent years, and the 27-year-old could be a low-cost replacement for Vidic, or at worst a valuable squad player at Old Trafford. Moyes has clearly taken an interest in signing Astori, and should comfortably be able to beat off Cardiff City and Southampton, who have also been credited with an interest in the Italian international.
Astori isn't the only Italian centre back to catch the eye of Moyes, with Inter Milan's Andrea Ranocchia also linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent months. The 25-year-old came close to a move to Borussia Dortmund in January, and with Vidic seemingly heading for the San Siro, Ranocchia's future would almost certainly be away from Inter. The former Genoa man has been prone to the occasional error during his time with the Nerazzurri, but he offers height and aerial ability at both ends of the field, two attributes that would come in very handy for Moyes and United.
