Liverpool could rival Manchester United for Vidic replacement?

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers could look to trump Manchester United in the transfer market by making a move for Galatasaray defender Semih Kaya.

The two sides are reportedly keeping a close eye on the Turkish international claim A Bola, with Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes both looking to strengthen their defensive options. Rodgers watched on as Kolo Toure cost his side two points with a calamitous error against West Bromwich Albion, whilst there are still major question marks over the future of Danish international Daniel Agger.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, experienced duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand are set to leave the club at the end of the season, leaving the Red Devils short at centre back. Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Phil Smalling are all serviceable defenders, but Moyes will certainly want to improve his options and a move for 22-year-old Kaya may be on the cards in the summer having impressed in the Champions League.

The fleet-footed defender already has 16 caps for the Turkish national team, as well as almost 100 appearances for Galatasaray in his short career so far. Whilst not particularly physically imposing, Kaya has good enough aerial ability and a great reading of the game, which has made him such a success so far.

This isn't the first time that Kaya has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, as Galatasaray confirmed in 2012 that Sir Alex Ferguson had enquired about their defender. “It is true to say that Sir Alex Ferguson had talked with our president about Semih,” said vice president Ali Durust. “He asked for the price of a possible transfer, but that question is yet to be answered.”

If both teams choose to pursue Kaya, his decision may come down to which team qualifies for the Champions League. Liverpool are currently in the box seat to make the top four, but a late run from Manchester United could catapult them back into the European football place.

With Galatasaray also pushing for Champions League football, it will be important for Kaya to remain at the top of the game to continue his development, with Liverpool arguably able to offer him more regular first-team football.
