Who would get into an Arsenal-Liverpool combined XI?

Arsene Wenger

The Anfield side hosts the Premier League leaders on Saturday, but with so much quality on each side what is the best starting line-up between the teams?

Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal is one of a number of mouth-watering clashes in the Premier League this weekend.

The hosts will hope to strengthen their case for fourth place with three points, while the Gunners need a positive result to keep their spot at the table’s summit.

Luis Suarez will be key for the home side, and with Arsenal trying to sign him in the summer the Uruguayan could well have been playing against Liverpool this weekend.

With this in mind, who would get into an Arsenal and Liverpool combined XI?

GK – Simon Mignolet

The Liverpool stopper gets the nod over Wojciech Szczesny by a slim margin. The Belgian has showed excellent form in his first season at the Merseyside club, with one or two blips, while the Emirates Stadium faithful are still to be convinced that the Pole is their long-term number one.

RB – Bacary Sagna

The France international has been one of the most consistent right backs in the Premier League for a number of seasons, with Arsenal risking potentially losing him this summer due to an expiring contract. Glen Johnson is the back-up, but has been too inconsistent this term.

CB – Laurent Koscielny

Alongside Per Mertesacker, the French defender has been a rock for the Gunners this season, ensuring that the North Londoners have a miserly back four.

CB – Per Mertesacker

The two Arsenal centre-halves together have formed a formidable partnership, and must play alongside each other in the combined XI. Mamadou Sakho has the ability to prove himself as a top defender, but needs more time to prove himself in England.

LB – Kieran Gibbs

With concerns over who will consistently play at left back for Liverpool, Arsenal’s Gibbs completes a Gunners’ back four. The home-grown talent has been keeping Nacho Monreal out of the team when fit, and is an outside bet for World Cup inclusion.

CM – Jordan Henderson

After a slow start to life at Anfield, Henderson was being tipped to depart the club. However, such is his resurgence of late, I am picking the up-and-coming star ahead of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard for the combined XI.

CM – Aaron Ramsey

The Gunners will be without the mercurial Wales international for the foreseeable future, but he has had a fantastic season so far. One of the first names on the team-sheet.

LW – Mesut Ozil

The assist master, the Germany international has played his part in taking Arsenal to the next level this season. Still to really show his best form, Ozil is world class.

RW – Raheem Sterling

Despite the ability and form of Santi Cazorla, Raheem Sterling has been one of the unsung heroes for Liverpool this season. The England international has shown that he is more than capable of commanding a place in the Reds’ starting XI, and gets the nod over Cazorla based on excellent recent showings.

ST – Luis Suarez

Arguably the best striker in the Premier League, Suarez would make most teams in the world and will be the main threat to Arsenal’s back line on Saturday.

ST – Daniel Sturridge

The England man has been in great goalscoring form since moving to Liverpool from Chelsea last January, and has struck up an effective partnership with Suarez. Gets selected before Olivier Giroud based on the number of goals he has scored this term compared to the Frenchman.
