Chelsea and Arsenal were both linked with moves for an FC Schalke youngster before Christmas, no not Julian Draxler but 18-year-old Max Meyer.
Meyer signed a new long term contract with the German club until the summer of 2018 but his buy out clause has just been revealed; €25.5 million.
German newspaper Bild ran a report with the figure which was then Tweeted by Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft on Twitter, which suggests that a move to either side could still be possible if either club is willing to put up the cash.
“Meyer can go for €25.5 million,” reads the headline of a story on Bild’s website.
German Football and BuyOutClauses! #bild reporting that the other great talent at Schalke, Max Meyer (18), got a 25,5 mill Euro clause 1/2— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) February 6, 2014
It’s a huge gamble but as Fjortoft points out, Meyer is one of the best prospects in Germany and if the clause can be triggered then a deal could be on the cards this summer.
Max Meyer (18) is one to watch! One of those talents you see for the first time and you just know: - This is class! 2/2— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) February 6, 2014
In his 16 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, Meyer has produced four goals and two assists with six of his appearances coming as a substitute.
There is definite potential there and it will be fascinating to see who takes the multi-million pound gamble on him this summer, especially if Schalke don’t finish in a Champions League position.
Is it a risk? Of course, because this is a youngster with a lot to prove and his current employers expect a huge fee if anyone tries to sign him.
However, it could be a very savvy investment, especially if Meyer blossoms into the sort of player Fjortoft, and plenty in Germany, believe he can become.
