Andros Townsend has been with Tottenham since the tender age of nine. He began his development with Spurs in 2000 and since 2009 he has gone out on loan to no less than nine different clubs to learn his trade. This term, it certainly shows…
The 22-year-old winger has scored just the one goal and made just one assist in the Premier League this season with Spurs across 14 appearances.
However, he holds the most successful dribble success rate of any other player in the English top tier with 57 successful dribbles, averaging 4.07 per game. He has been dispossessed on 25 occasions this term, making his success rate 69.5% so far.
That’s better than Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (3.8 per game), Liverpool’s Luis Suarez (2.9 per game), Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (1.6 per game) and, across the continent, that’s higher than Gareth Bale (1.1 per game), Cristiano Ronaldo (2 per game) and only marginally behind Lionel Messi (4.7 per game).
Messi has a dribble success rate of 72.4%, Ronaldo has a rate of 55.1%, Bale even last season in the Premier League only worked off a 52.6% success rate and this season Luis Suarez is only achieving a rate of 60.4%.
Andros Townsend is, technically, the most unstoppable player in the Premier League with the ball at his feet and, what’s more, he cost Spurs absolutely nothing. When you consider that he is still just 22 and that this is his first full season in the Premier League with Spurs, that is quite astonishing and certainly worrying for the other 19 teams in the league in the future.
