Gary Neville was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of this weekend's fixtures.
Neville has tipped his old club to ultimately take the place but he says there needs to be improvement from United in David Moyes’ first season in charge at the club.
Liverpool currently occupy the fourth Champions League place going into this weekend’s fixtures, two points clear of Everton in fifth place. Tottenham Hotspur are currently in sixth and three points behind Liverpool, whilst Manchester United currently sit seventh, seven points behind.
Neville told Sky Sports: ‘I would have said a few weeks ago that United would have got fourth place, I’m not going to change it just yet, but there has to be big improvements.
‘I have to say at the moment Liverpool are in pole position and look the strongest.
‘Liverpool were top of the league on Boxing Day and I think that there has been a progression there this season, mainly though Luis Suarez’s form who has been incredible but he is supported and aided by the rest of his team mates.
‘The big battles for all teams are still to come and it could be any of those four, but I think it will be between United and Liverpool.’
Liverpool face top of the table Arsenal this weekend whilst Manchester United host bottom of the table Fulham.
It feels as though this weekend could be a key one in the season for both sides, especially in the case of United – they simply have to beat Fulham to either keep pace with Liverpool, or capitalise on any dropped points which is a real possibility, on a weekend where other top four rivals, Tottenham and Everton, meet each other.
