Arsenal linked star suffers heartbreak as transfer is cancelled after posing with the shirt

Sebastien Corchia

Arsenal linked right-back Sebastien Corchia thought he had secured a transfer to Lille. Not quite.

'Only believe the transfer rumour until the player is pictured and presented wearing the shirt.' - Goes the adage of fans sceptical about the latest speculation.

Yet even this is not guaranteed, as the case of Sebastien Corchia has proved over the past 24 hours.

The 23-year-old former France under-21 international thought he had clinched a move to Lille ahead of the transfer deadline, but incorrectly filed paperwork has seen the transfer filed void.

Corchia has been pushing for a move away from Sochaux for months, and has been widely touted for a move to Arsenal as a replacement for Bacary Sagna if the right-back moves on.

The decision was made by the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), and upheld by the French Football Federation (FFF).

The DNCG monitor and oversee the accounts of all the professional clubs in France - and ruled that Lille have ‘insufficient bank guarantees or excessive payroll’ in order for such a move to be signed off.

Lille director general Frederic Paquet reacted with anger to the decision, telling RMC Sport: "We think it's completely outrageous and incoherent, being polite...we came across an appeal board which did not even listen. They did not even try to understand."

Corchia meanwhile, Paquet, confirmed, is still officially a Sochaux player, and must head back to his former club, and spend the rest of the season there - unless further appeals from Lille are successful.

And wouldn't you know it, the fixture calendar has thrown up an interesting tie this weekend:

Lille v Sochaux. Whether Corchia is involved, is another matter, but it promises to be a rather awkward moment for him. Amid all the twists and turns, it's inevitable he will probably pop up and score the winner.
