Gervinho was an enigma to Arsenal fans during his time at the Emirates, and his sensational form for new side Roma only makes his time there more so.
The Ivory Coast international grabbed an impressive brace for Roma last night to give them a 3-2 semi-final advantage in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, netting the game's opener and the winner.
The 26-year-old can also boast five Serie A strikes and fives assists to his name this season, playing a key role under manager Rudi Garcia, his old Lille boss.
It's a far cry from this time last season when he was regarded as bit of a joke figure at Arsenal, with memories of his open goal miss against Bradford City still fresh in the memory.
Arsene Wenger admitted last summer he sold the winger because he wanted to to thrive, and he was not doing so at the Emirates, claiming he was struggling to struggle amid pressure from the crowd.
Gervinho is not bitter about his time at Arsenal, he told L’Equipe this week: "“I think my adventure in London was positive, I have always dreamed of playing for Arsenal, and I had good times there.
“It’s just a shame I didn’t get to play more. But it’s not a failure. All leagues correspond to my qualities, I just need confidence.”
Gervinho was unfortunate in that both his seasons with Arsenal coincided with African Nations Cup years, with his departure for the competition disrupting his form particularly in his debut season; after returning he simply wasn't the same.
His form at Roma throws out the question if the club should have loaned him or retained a first option agreement, for a player performing like he is right now is just what Arsenal need.
Had he stayed at Arsenal he may well have continued to struggle, but his adventures in Italy certainly has fans wondering what might have been and where it all went wrong.
We shouldn't have sold Gervinho. There. I said it. #AFC— Leon Corriea (@goonerleon10) February 5, 2014
Nice to see Gervinho doing the business in Italy! Always did have talent, just not enough confidence and belief to hack the EPL! #Afc— Mr Kirkstall (@Ste_Bell10) February 6, 2014
Glad to see Gervinho doing well at Roma, but suggestions that Wenger was wrong to sell him are ridiculous #afc— Anish Jain (@AnishJ7) February 5, 2014
How weird is it that Gervinho is exactly what Arsenal need #AFC— Jack Rathborn (@jackrathborn) February 5, 2014
Where was this Gervinho when he was plying his trade at the Emirates?— Matthew Duncan (@maduncan4) February 5, 2014
