Former fans favourite says Liverpool and Suarez belong in the Champions League

Fenerbache forward Dirk Kuyt has sung the praises of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

Luis Suárez is having the season of his life. The controversial Uruguayan has scored 23 Premier League goals in just 19 appearances – eight more than the next top goalscorer Sergio Aguero.

A similar goal haul throughout 2014 could well see the dominance that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi hold over Europe finally broken.

One of Suarez’s biggest fans is former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt. Over the years the current Fenerbache man scored some vitally important goals in a Liverpool shirt, including a memorable hat-trick against Manchester United. However, the Dutch international never got close to the sort of goalscoring form currently produced by Liverpool idol Luis Suarez.

Following an interview with The Sport Review, Kuyt believes Suárez’s ability to be at the elite level, saying that the Uruguayan has what it takes to win the most prestigious individual award in world football:

“He’s definitely for me at the moment at that level,”

“What Ronaldo has done is amazing and everybody knows the quality of Messi but after these two guys he’s a serious contender [to win the Ballon d'Or].”

Dirk Kuyt went on to mention that Liverpool’s recent exclusion from the Champions League has been tough, indicating that despite finishing outside the top four in recent years, the Reds and Suarez both belong at the elite level:

“Liverpool is contending for the Champions League and this the level where Suárez belongs and also where Liverpool belongs. I can’t wait to see Liverpool back in the Champions League together with Suárez and I think that will be the next step for both.”

“I think the difficulties he’s had in the past at Liverpool have made him even stronger but from the first day he arrived, he was something special, everyone could see that.”

“It’s frightening [to think] how good he can be, but for me at the moment, he’s the best player in the Premier League.”
