Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Ashley Cole return rumours - 'Joke of the day!'

Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole has been linked with a sensational return to Arsenal.

Several reports this morning have suggested that Arsenal will look at the prospect of re-signing former defender Ashley Cole at the end of the season.

Cole infamously left Arsenal in 2006 in a £5 million deal, which saw him link up with the Roman Abramovich revolution at Stamford Bridge.

Needless to say the motive behind the decision to switch from North to West London seemed to be finance, with reports at the time suggesting the Blues were willing to pay £35,000 per week more than Arsenal presented in a new contract offer.

As things stand, his current deal with Chelsea expires at the end of the season and reports have suggested Arsene Wenger is looking to pounce.

He’s featured in just 13 Premier League games for the Blues this season with Jose Mourinho seemingly casting him aside following the news over Christmas that he turned up at the Arsenal Christmas party after the Chelsea one was cancelled.

However, the motives behind any Wenger interest are confusing and difficult to understand.

Arsenal are well stocked at left-back with Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal both proving to be efficient and consistent players in that position for the club.

They are both happy and the manager has shown no sign that he’s looking to replace either, with Cole’s return to Arsenal pushing one further down the pecking order in the first team squad.

Gibbs in particular has come on dramatically this season, keeping Monreal out of the side over the early part of the season before picking up an injury which allowed the Spaniard to come back into the side.

Wenger has broken a previous habit of not signing former players before but this looks more than unlikely and something which certainly wouldn’t be popular with the fans.

Here’s what Arsenal fans have been making of the rumours on Twitter.
