The teenager has had something of a breakthrough campaign in 2013-14. He signed for the club last summer from Karlsruher but was immediately loaned back to the Baden-Wurttemberg side - as his 14 goals in 31 games helped them earn promotion from 3.Liga to the 2.Bundesliga.
His style of play and Turkish background have seen him dubbed ‘the next Mesut Ozil’ and his star has been shining since the beginning of the current campaign.
Many a club took notice - but Arsenal were linked with a ‘concrete’ interest in the player - something which was later branded completely untrue by the players agent. At the same time Liverpool were also said to be keen on the Turkish international.
But just before Christmas he made it clear that he dreams of one day playing in the gold and red of Galatasaray, the club he has supported since he was a little boy.
Here is what he said on Turkish television:
"There are conversations. My advisor is in contact with Galatasaray. My heart beats gold-red. I could not play for Besiktas or Fenerbahce either. "
So back then it appeared as though he had one thing on his mind - a move to Turkey.
Well don’t fear Premier League fans - rejection hasn’t come yet. Because he isn’t off to Turkey either - in fact, he has signed an extension at Hamburg.
His previous deal expired in 2016 - but he has moved to commit his future to the club until 2018 - much to the pleasure of the HSV fans.
Here is what he said about the new deal:
"I myself confess this is a difficult situation for HSV and I want to put a sign with the signature. I'm going to put in mind that we get out as quickly as possible down everything. I would like to achieve in the next few years as much as possible with the club."
Hamburg are battling relegation - and should they lose that fight their already crippling debts would be unlikely to support talents such as Calhanoglu.
But if they do stay up - there is no doubt he will be likely to stay for the foreseeable future.
