Sampdoria came out on top of the local derby with Genoa thanks to a smartly taken goal from Argentine marksman Maxi Lopez.
The 29-year-old returned to Sampdoria on loan from Catania in early January for a second spell having been at the club for the 2012-13 campaign.
Fans had threatened to boycott the game when it was scheduled for Sunday lunchtime, but their wishes were heard and it was rearranged, so it took place with a passionate atmosphere.
The decisive goal from Lopez came after 24 minutes when he played a one-two with the highly rated Eder and tucked away a neat finish.
Genoa nearly equalised through Andrea Bertolacci just before half-time but it was ruled out for offside.
Moussa Konate also had a goal disallowed for offside and Sampdoria goalkeeper Junior Da Costa was on great form, making several key saves to secure the win.
After the final whistle, Lopez enthused that he couldn't have asked for more from his first game back at Samp.
