Report - Hope of an Old Trafford return for defensive star may be over

Talks are ongoing over a new contract for Barcelona star Gerard Pique.

Catalan newspaper Sport has reported that negotiations over a new deal for Barcelona defender Gerard Pique are ongoing.

Pique returned to the Spanish giants in May 2008 and has turned himself into one of the best centre backs in the world.

Ever since his transformation in Barcelona colours, the idea that United could bring him back to Old Trafford has surfaced from time to time with consistent reports from 2011 to 2013 suggesting just that.

However, the 27-year-old is talking about a new deal at the Nou Camp which would take him into his 30s, more than likely eradicating any chance that he could return to Manchester.

“Everything will be fine. President With the change of course. Bartomeu has already contacted us,” Pique is quoted by Sport.

The idea had been raised that Josep Bartomeu coming in as the club’s new president, may have prompted talks to break down but the player himself has confirmed that’s not the case and little has changed.

This may not be a set of negotiations which gets concluded quickly for several reasons, but that doesn’t mean United will have more hope of getting their hands on Pique again.

His current deal doesn’t expire until 2015 and he’s arguably the most important member of the current defence at the club.

Therefore, his representatives will want that reflected in a new deal which means things like higher wages, more bonuses and terms which suck up the time in contract negotiations.

A new five-year deal isn’t impossible and by the time that expires, Pique would be 32-years-old and several current members of the Manchester United defence will be in their prime.
