Patrick Van Aanholt reportedly held talks with Jose Mourinho over his future last weekend.
Patrick Van Aanholt has held talks with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho over his future at the club.
The discussions reportedly took place last weekend, with the Dutchman seemingly eager to have some sort of future at Chelsea despite the recent speculation over a potential move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
“Even if I was the number 12, I'd rather stay. It's about playing and developing. I still think Chelsea are a nice club but with their millions, there's so many (players) they can buy. It makes the chance to really break through as a young talent quite small,” he told De Telegraaf.
So what questions were likely to have been covered over the weekend?
Van Aanholt has played 19 games in the Eredivisie so far this season so the logic in sending him on loan to Vitesse Arnhem has been justified.
Whether he gets as much football with Chelsea next season is debatable. Ashley Cole could still sign a new contract at the club while the arrival of a player like Shaw would surely push him further down the pecking order.
His current deal expires with Chelsea in 2015, which means this summer is likely to be around the time the Blues look at renewing it.
Talks are unlikely to happen before hand because of assurances which tie in with the amount of playing time he’s likely to get.
However, his comments suggest he’s ready and determined to dig in for first team football at Stamford Bridge over the next couple of years.
Van Aanholt has had a great season so far with Vitesse bagging four goals and providing three assists from his appearances.
Mourinho could have sounded him out over the possibility of extending the deal to next season, based on another left-back coming in.
It may also have been a chance for the 23-year-old to request a possible loan move to a higher profile club, which would improve his development even further.
Mourinho and Van Aanholt may have discussed the possibility of a permanent switch to Vitesse at the end of the season.
However, that’s something which wouldn’t happen until after the World Cup and after the club had another chance to sign some cover.
Van Aanholt is definitely a better defender than the one who joined Vitesse at the start of this season so Chelsea could demand a decent fee for him.
