Liverpool morning news: Midfielder set for fresh contract talks, Rodgers says Reds ahead of schedule

A selection of the key stories involving Liverpool Football Club this Tuesday morning.

Liverpool are set to open contract talks with their midfielder Jordan Henderson at the end of the season according to the Daily Mail.

Henderson has been in fine form this season and appears to have won over many of the sceptics since his £16m move from Sunderland in the summer of 2011.

The midfielder has appeared in every game for Liverpool this season and has been a key part of the side that is trying to get the Reds back into the Champions League.

Manager Brendan Rodgers thinks that Liverpool are in the mix to qualify for the Champions League a year ahead of schedule under his stewardship.

Rodgers said: ‘There is still an awful long way to go and we still have a lot of work to do, but we have a lot of the rivals to play at home.

‘I still feel there is a long way for this team to go – we are still building something here. I feel if we can get in the top four this year it would probably be a year early for us to what I was thinking.

‘But you can’t always plan perfectly. We have had a terrific season until now and we can only get better at it.’

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has said training with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has helped him improve, as he has got through a spell of poor form according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Belgian stopper said: ‘I had a difficult month but you are going to get them as a football player.

‘I didn’t change anything. I just tried to stay focused and do the things I’m asked to do. As a keeper I just try to help the team out whenever I can.

‘It’s nice to work with Luis and Daniel day in day out as it makes you better as a keeper.

‘When you are one v one with strikers of that quality you learn a lot of things.’
