Arsenal latest: Defender’s rallying cry; Draxler to Bayern a no-go?

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal and their fans have received some encouraging news from Germany today, with Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies quoted in Sport Bild as ruling out a move to Bayern Munich for Julian Draxler.

I do not think he wants Bayern,” Tonnies is quoted as saying. “I can rule with one-hundred percent probability.”

So that may leave Arsenal in the box-seat for a player they were heavily linked with all of last month.

In other news, defender Per Mertesacker has challenged his teammates to dig deep as they look to end the season as well as they began it.

In quotes published by the London Evening Standard, the German international said, “It is that part of the season when you might feel tired or exhausted, but we have to keep our chins up and now the really important games are coming.”

They certainly are, with the Gunners facing Liverpool (twice), Manchester United and Bayern Munich in quick succession.

And if Arsene Wenger’s men can come through that series of fixtures unscathed, they could finally be getting their hands on a trophy or two again.

Jose Mourinho for one believes it is a two-horse-race for the title, between Arsenal and Manchester City.

But Wenger will not be fooled by the Portuguese coach’s horse and milk analogy. He will know Chelsea will be just as tough an opponent as City in the race for the title Gunners fans have been dreaming of for a long time.
