‘£12.3m Manchester United bid’ player edges closer to move after Europa League omission

Reported Manchester United target Nicolas Otamendi appears to be close to a move away from FC Porto after being omitted from their Europa League squad.

A report in Goal last month claimed Manchester United had made a £12.3million bid for FC Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi.

In truth it was a strange rumour, given the Argentine’s recent dip in form and the fact that he could most likely be secured on loan – given that Valencia looked set to do just that before the move fell through at the 11th hour.

United have regularly been linked with Otamendi’s Porto teammate Eliaquim Mangala, and while the former would have been considerably cheaper, it is the Frenchman who is the real jewel in that particular crown.

With the English transfer window now closed, David Moyes will not be signing either centre-back (or anyone else for that matter) for some time, but Otamendi could still be on the move.

Reports in the last few days from both Portuguese and Italian media outlets have suggested the defender could be set for Russia, with their own transfer window closing on 24 February.

And now those rumours look a little more real, following the news from A Bola that Porto have omitted Otamendi from their Europa League squad with the competition soon to resume.

So is the man once tipped for a multi-million move to Old Trafford instead heading to Zenit St Petersburg?

They have been heavily linked with a number of defenders in recent weeks - including Ezequiel Garay and Thomas Vermaelen - but Otamendi certainly seems set for somewhere. Unless, he is destined to sit out his current club’s European exploits but remain exactly where he is.
