A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United…
The transfer window may have closed for another few months, but Manchester United will not have stopped thinking about targets – most notably in midfield considering another defeat at the hands of Stoke City on Saturday.
One player linked with a move to Old Trafford more heavily than most is William Carvalho, and according to Sport Witness, United again had scouts in attendance as his side Sporting Lisbon played Academica on Sunday.
The Portuguese midfielder is an excellent prospect and exactly the kind of player David Moyes needs in the centre. So while a January switch was not forthcoming, United may be pondering a move for a player with a €45million release-clause next summer.
In other news, Chris Smalling has been talking about the prospect of United missing out on a Champions League place.
In quotes published by the Manchester Evening News, the defender said, “Obviously we’re not in those top four positions at the moment and that’s a worry but there is plenty of football.
“There’s a lot to go but time is running out and we need to make sure we put things right come the next game.”
United will be grateful that Liverpool dropped two points against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. But with both the Reds and their Merseyside rivals Everton performing so impressively this season, Moyes has a lot to do to ensure he is overseeing Champions League football next season.
