Report: Napoli failed to sign Sunderland man

It is being reported in the British and Italian media that Napoli made a shock deadline day bid for Sunderland's Lee Cattermole.

Napoli nearly made an unexpected signing on the final day of the January transfer window in the form of Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole, it has been revealed.

The Partenopei were very active in the market and coach Rafa Benitez set his heart on bringing several Premier League players to Campania.

But a new name has surfaced amongst those in Cattermole, who was allegedly the target of a failed deadline day bid.

According to various newspapers, including the Mirror, it wasn't just Stoke City who attempted to sign Cattermole as Napoli had already launched a failed offer.

Cattermole's future may not be at the Stadium of Light and many believe that the signing of Liam Bridcutt from Brighton is a sign that Gus Poyet doesn't regard him as a solid option.

It is being suggested that Benitez may return for Cattermole in the summer when he is expected to again look for several new recruits.

Napoli ultimately failed to sign Tottenham midfielder Étienne Capoue despite intense negotiations on deadline day and Benitez doesn't appear to have completed his work in the market.

Benitez watched his side fall to a hugely disappointing 3-0 loss to lowly Atalanta yesterday, which leaves Napoli 15 points back from leaders Juventus.
