A round up of the latest news stories about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Kolo Toure has revealed he is devastated by his mistake which allowed West Brom to equalise yesterday. Toure attempted a back pass to Simon Mignolet, which allowed Victor Anichebe to score.
“It was a terrible pass by me. You have to make the right decisions and today I took a bad decision. It was my call. I should have passed to one of our players but instead I passed it straight to the striker,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
The mistake meant Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at West Brom, with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has called for focus in the fight for a top four place, insisting the club will try their best to achieve Champions League football.
“We will try to do our best. There’s still a long way to go before the end of the season and we have to pick up as many points as we can along the way,” he told the Liverpool website.
On the transfer front, Brendan Rodgers has suggested the club could have another go at signing Dnipro’s Yevhen Konoplyanka in the summer. Liverpool couldn’t get a deal done in time before the deadline last Friday but the boss says a deal is still possible.
“If we feel the player can improve us, we will look at it again in the summer. We are professional people and a professional club. If we feel that is an area we want to look at, there will be a greater market in the summer,” said the Liverpool boss.
The Ukrainian is someone that former star Mark Lawrenson says the club were correct not to sign. Lawrenson says Liverpool were right to stand by their values and not cave into Dnipro’s fee demands.
In another high profile story, the Express has suggested that Liverpool will join the race to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos. The German is being coveted by Manchester United but the daily newspaper has suggested that Brendan Rodgers’ men have an interest.
Liverpool appeared to fail with a second deadline day last week. A report today has suggested the club were keen on an €8 million deal for Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo, which fell through because of demands for a buy back clause.
TalkSport suggested today that Atletico Madrid are ready to make a bid for Pepe Reina as a replacement for Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Spanish side are thought to be keen on keeping Courtois although Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho has suggested the Belgian will return to Stamford Bridge.
In other news, striker Luis Suarez has gone back to the top of the European Golden Shoe standings. Suarez has one more goal than Cristiano Ronaldo and is two points ahead on the table.
