Newcastle United director of football Joe Kinnear has resigned from his post.
Joe Kinnear has resigned from his post at Newcastle, SkySports have confirmed.
Kinnear was placed in charge of signings at the club, yet failed to bring in a permanent transfer despite boasting of his contacts when starting his new role.
His only signings were Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong on loan, while star player Yohan Cabate was sold.
Speaking to Match of the Day 2, former Newcastle goalscoring hero Alan Shearer gave his view:
"I always say nothing should surprise you in football, certainly not with Newcastle anyway, but I was very surprised with his appointment in the first place.
"Particularly with the way it was announced, with the way Joe himself announced it on the radio.
"(He) got all those names wrong, after being out of the game for so long...it was a strange appointment in the first place, but I'm not surprised.
"When you sell your best player as you did three days before the deadline, you have to have a plan.
"You have to have someone ready to come in. There was talk about Cabaye going to PSG anyway so there had to be a plan there.
"Whether that's Newcastle's way of saying, he didn't do his job, he didn't bring players in... but I hope it's not ill health, I hope he's OK there, but I'm not sure what his job was there anyway at Newcastle."
