Did Tottenham Hotspur miss the chance to sign the 'next Ronaldo'?

Marca suggests Zinedine Zidane is determined to turn Jese Rodriguez into one of the world's best players.

Tottenham Hotspur have been strongly linked with Real Madrid star Jese Rodriguez over the last two summers.

In 2012, the club baulked at the £30 million asking price that the Bernabeu side were demanding for the young forward while last summer, the Spanish giants were reluctant to let him go as part of or separate to the Gareth Bale deal.

That recent reluctance seems to have been born out of Real Madrid icon Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman is one of the few people at the club who people stop and listen to when he starts speaking.

Zidane has been giving Jese extra ‘master classes’ according to Spanish newspaper Marca, which take place once regular training sessions with Carlo Ancelotti end each day.

“Carlo Ancelotti blows his whistle to signal the end of training, at which point Zidane begins his master class with Jesé. The Frenchman puts in more overtime with the young Spaniard than with any other player. He sees him as "one for the future" and is determined to turn him into one of the world's best players,” reads the opening part of the report on Marca.

Zidane sees something in him, something which suggests maybe Tottenham should have taken the £30 million plunge two summers ago.

The whole report on Marca seems to suggest that Zidane believes Jese could develop into the next Cristiano Ronaldo or a star who could have a similar impact in terms of goals and assists to the first team.

There doesn’t seem to be a particularly clever method that Zidane uses in these sessions, it just seems to be all about practice, routine and ensuring that Jese is ready to take advantage of the half chances that players like Ronaldo eat up for breakfast.

“A sequence of technical moves and shots under the supervision of Zinedine Zidane, one of the world's greatest ever players,” adds the report.

Not a bad person to stay behind and do extra drills with but Zidane’s interest and his status at Real Madrid, make it virtually impossible for any side coming in to poach Jese away in the near future.
