Mesut Ozil ranks third in the world in shirt sales so far for the 2013/14 season.
Since arriving from Real Madrid in an astonishing summer move, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil’s name and number have been printed more times than any other Premier League player.
The £42.4m that Arsenal spent on the German international sent shockwaves through Europe and beyond as Arsenal fans flocked to the club’s shops to buy the new Arsenal kit adorning the name ‘Ozil’ with number 11.
Mesut Ozil has kept up his reputation as the assist king – picking up eight assists in 19 Premier League starts. The 25-year-old has also netted four goals, and has completed 55 key passes this term – over 20 more than Arsenal’s next best.
Despite Ozil being a big hit this season, La Liga duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi naturally occupy the first two spots as both are household names worldwide – selling shirts galore in worldwide, in places such as South America, Asia and the Middle East.
Manchester United are a huge catch globally with star players such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa topping their list. However, none of them have proved as popular as Arsenal’s number 11 who sits in third place in the overall ranking.
Is he simply more popular than Man Utd’s top players?
One could point out that the numbers don’t necessarily mean which players are better – as surely Franck Ribery would at least make the top 10.
On the other hand, the results could prove how a summer without a top signing affects the results – or worse that Man Utd lack a real household name.
Perhaps a signing in the mould of Toni Kroos or Koke for the Red Devils could see Ozil being knocked out of the top three this time next year.
