Manchester United target Mats Hummels has revealed that he and teammates chuckle about the transfer rumours surrounding the club.
Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has revealed that key members of the BVB first team laugh at the transfer rumours linking players away from the club.
Dortmund have some of the most talented players in Europe with Hummels and teammate Ilkay Gundogan linked with moves to Manchester United while Marco Reus has been linked with nearly every top team across Europe.
“We do have our jokes about it and go with it really much more relaxed than many believe. Also, because we have great confidence in the people in our club's management. I assume that now already the new season will be planned,” Hummels told Welt.
It’s a tribute to BVB that their players are regularly linked with huge sides because it’s proof of the quality and consistency which comes from the coaching setup and scouting network at the club.
Hummels’ comments also suggest that the rumours which have followed Dortmund’s stars around in the recent past are nothing more than a product of the rumour mill.
That doesn’t mean that United can’t pull off a deal for Hummels or Gundogan this summer or that Reus couldn’t end up at Manchester City, it just means there’s been no official link between the clubs which would add weight to a transfer rumour.
It’s also debatable how willing BVB are going to be to do deals this summer, with Robert Lewandowski joining Mario Gotze in moving to rivals Bayern Munich from the club.
That could have the effect of prompting the German giants to shut up shop, determined to stop key players from leaving which would subsequently make them weaker. Something that no side in any top European division desires.
