Pep Guardiola says Bayern Munich’s 5-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt was their best performance of the season so far.
However, Manchester United transfer target Toni Kroos couldn’t help but sit on the bench and watch as he was an unused substitute during the entertaining 90 minutes.
“This was our best home game so far this season. I am very satisfied. My players put in a great performance and I can only congratulate them. We made a good step forward,” said Guardiola at a press conference.
Goals were shared out between Mario Gotze, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Dante and Mario Mandzukic as the German champions maintained their lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
It’s not uncommon for coaches to take off key players late in a game when the match has been one but on this occasion, Kroos didn’t get anywhere near an appearance and was confined to the dugout.
There was intense speculation last week that David Moyes would make a late January move to take the 24-yearpold German away from the Allianz Arena as he looked to strengthen his United team.
The move didn’t happen with Kroos seemingly content to fight for his place, with an arguably better chance of making the Germany World Cup squad this summer by staying in his home nation.
Guardiola would never admit to an ulterior motive in leaving Kroos on the bench and it may just have been a rest for the German, with Thomas Muller also an unused sub during the game.
Keep an eye on Kroos’ situation because the speculation will only grow each time he’s left out of the Bayern first team over the rest of the season.
