Was 'painful' €20m deal the reason Arsenal were denied Klose signing?

Arsenal failed in a deadline day attempt to sign Miroslav Klose, was Hernanes the reason why?

Arsenal succeeded in one loan deal on deadline day, signing Kim Kallstrom from Spartak Moscow.

They were however less so in signing their other target, Miroslav Klose from Lazio.

The Italian side denied the loan request, reportedly leaving the German striker 'upset' at the denial over a move to North London.

Lazio did however boost their attack, signing what could have been a replacement in Helder Postiga from La Liga side Valencia on loan, and Gael Kakuta from Chelsea.

With Klose scoring just the five goals this season so far, perhaps Lazio were well positioned to consider any request from the striker to let him go to the Gunners?

Well there's one simple reason why they just couldn't afford to consider it, and that was the fallout from another outgoing player on the same day.

Brazilian fan favourite Hernanes was sold to Inter Milan for €20 million, a transfer even the player admitted was 'painful.'

It was a deal which saw Lazio fans protest in the days leading up to it, with Hernanes seen as a key part of their team, while the club president had insisted in the weeks prior that he was unwilling to sell.

Lazio's infamous 'Ultras' are not a set of fans the club want to unnecessarily upset, and sending Klose out on loan would simply have aggravated the situation further.

The club were also reeling off the back of relinquishing their Coppa Italia crown, dumped out of the competition in a 1-0 midweek to Napoli.

Clearly the circumstances at the club were not that of a side who were in a good moment, who could afford to allow Klose go.

Had Hernanes remained put, who knows, Arsenal may well have had more luck in signing Germany's all-time joint-record goalscorer.
