£32m Chelsea target scores and assists, helps create 18-year history

Diego Costa proved he is back on top form for Atletico after recently ending a 700 minute plus goal drought.

Atletico Madrid momentously sit top of La Liga, for the first time incredibly in 18 years.

They demolished Real Sociedad 4-0 on Sunday night, capitalising on Barcelona's 3-2 defeat to Valencia the night before.

Instrumental in their win was Diego Costa, their talismanic striker who scored his first goal of 2014 in a midweek Copa del Rey win over Athletic Bilbao, ending a frustrating stretch of 700 plus minutes without finding the net.

He found himself on the scoresheet once again last night, finishing clinically after being put through on goal, taking his personal tally for the season to 20 La Liga goals in as many games.

With a scoring record like that, it's little wonder Premier League title chasers Chelsea have been linked with his signature all season long, with Jose Mourinho even having to deny last week that a pre-agreement had been struck for his signature in the summer.

Against Sociedad, he was superb, scoring one, assisting another, and completing as many successful dribbles as the rest of his Atletico Madrid teammates put together.

His success this season has Atletico dreaming of creating history, now having reached the summit of La Liga finally - they have to try to find a way to stay there.
