If it were possible to do such a thing – considering the amount of rumours that circulate during both the summer and the winter transfer windows – a count-up of the amount of times certain names were mentioned would surely see Ezequiel Garay somewhere near the top.
The Argentine defender has been linked with a Benfica departure seemingly since he arrived, with Manchester United his most regularly suggested destination.
More recently, Chelsea found their way into his hypothetical future, but it is currently a link with Zenit St Petersburg that refuses to go away.
Reports earlier this month suggested the Russian club were keen to sign both Garay and his Benfica teammate Rodrigo.
And yet it was later claimed in the same publications that neither player fancied a move to Russia, with Rodrigo reportedly holding out for a switch to either the Premier League or La Liga, and Garay still apparently dreaming of that oft-suggested but never realised move to Old Trafford.
And now newspaper A Bola is reporting that Zenit are refusing to give up on the defender, given that the Russian transfer window remains open for another 22 days.
The paper claims that after an initial move was rejected Zenit returned with a fresh bid and negotiations are ongoing over a possible transfer in the region of €20million.
“Parties continue to talk and the possibility that business can be achieved remains open,” the report states, “so the Argentina international could have played his last game for Benfica yesterday.”
If Garay does finally complete a move, it will be the end of a long and rumour-riddled road. But given the player in question – and the amount of reports linking him with a transfer in the past – we won’t hold our breath.
