Arsenal were forced to make a move in the Transfer Window yesterday - as concerns over his midfield area left Arsene Wenger scrambling for reinforcements.
Aaron Ramsey’s six week lay-off was one thing - but with Mathieu Flamini suspended for three games, Jack Wilshere still needing to be treated carefully because of his fitness concerns and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain only recently returning from injury - a previously unexpected move for a midfielder took precedence over the clubs striker pursuit.
And they got their man in the form of Kim Kallstrom.
Kallstrom has not been playing regular football at Spartak Moscow and Wenger was a fan from his time in France with Rennes and Lyon.
A cultured left-footer, his loan deal until the end of the season was confirmed yesterday evening and he was obviously ecstatic at the chance to sample Premier League football so late into his career:
“Arsenal is an amazing club with a lot of great players and a coach who has done really well here for a long time. I am so pleased to come here to learn as much as possible. I’m here to do my best for Arsenal and to help out the team, so we can achieve good results for the last part of the season.”
And he wasn’t the only one happy to see him arrive.
Arsenal’s teenage prodigy Kristoffer Olsson was also pleased that the club had bought in another Swede to add to the gang.
He left a welcome message on Twitter to his compatriot - and Arsenal fans will hope Kallstrom is more Freddie Ljungberg than he is Rami Shaaban:
And I see that Kim Källström is an Arsenal player! Wow happy to have swedish company, välkommen Kim :)— Kristoffer Olsson (@krisolsson) January 31, 2014
