Portuguese giants Benfica have pulled off one of the greatest deadline day deals ever.
According to Portuguese newspaper A bola, Benfica have concluded arguably one of the greatest deadline day deals in history.
Brazilian Rodrigo was once a Real Madrid player, but moved to Portugal with Benfica. He then went to Bolton Wanderers on a season-long loan, but his one goal in 17 appearances didn’t satisfy the fans as the Trotters struggled.
Labelled a flop, Rodrigo returned to Portugal and became a regular goalscrorer. According to O jogo and The Mirror, Arsenal were interested in the player, who had already attracted a reported £25m bid from Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg.
However, with no Arsenal offer apparently forthcoming, Benfica have announced the sale of the full 100% economic rights of the Benfica duo.
The company which acquired the rights is Incidental Meriton Capital Limited, and they are believed to have purchased the rights of Rodrigo for €30m and Andre Gomes for €15m - however the duo will remain at Estadio Da Luz until at least the summer.
The duo’s representative is famed agent Jorge Mendes, and together the parties sat down to thrash out a deal which ultimately helps improve Benfica’s poor financial situation. The players are said likely to be available for transfer after the World Cup this summer.
Further good news in this incredible deal is that Benfica have managed to negotiate a 25% sell-on clause into the contract of 23-year-old Paraguayan midfielder Gomes.
Did Benfica managed to pull off the best deal of the day ?
