Liverpool morning news: ‘I didn’t expect it to be so painful’ says defender

A select round-up of news relating to Liverpool

Liverpool fans spent most of yesterday wondering if Yevhen Konoplyanka would arrive at Anfield prior to the 11pm deadline. But in the end it wasn’t to be.

This morning, the Guardian has a detailed piece on why the move failed to materialise.

After what they call “days of complex negotiations”, the deal did not go through despite the player agreeing terms and the Reds meeting his release-clause.

The report states that in the end Dnipro’s owner Ihor Kolomoyskyi refused to sanction the player’s release, leaving Liverpool to make do with the players already at their disposal.

Despite reported interest from Tottenham in the winger, the Guardian claims Liverpool were the only club to hold direct talks with Dnipro over a move.

In other news, Martin Skrtel has told the club’s official website how painful it was to get his head stapled after an injury sustained against Bournemouth last weekend.

I didn’t expect it to be so painful,” the defender said.

When it actually happened, I said to the doctor, ‘Is this going to be painful?’ and he said I was going to be alright. But he was lying. It was painful.

But that kind of thing happens in football and you have to deal with it.”
