Despite being linked with deadline-day moves for Julian Draxler, Miroslav Klose and Salomon Kalou, Arsenal welcomed another player to the club on Friday – after they signed Kim Kallstrom on loan from Spartak Moscow for the rest of the season.
While some Gunners fans are less than impressed with Arsene Wenger’s January business, the arrival of the Swedish international is a win-win. With injuries and suspensions hitting the club hard in the coming weeks, an experienced midfielder coming in on a temporary basis is not exactly a foolish move on the part of the manager.
While a goal-scorer would have been top of most fans’ wanted-list, that simply was not possible – at least not the ones Wenger deemed right for the club.
So while Kallstrom is not the type of player to set pulses racing and single-handedly propel Arsenal to the Premier League title, he could play a vital role in the absence of the likes of Mathieu Flamini and Aaron Ramsey.
One player who was quick to welcome Kallstrom to the club was Jack Wilshere, who took to Twitter to celebrate the arrival of “another lefty”.
He will be hoping that left foot is the wand some pundits have suggested. It could still make a difference, in an understated but equally important way, as Wenger attempts to nudge his side over the line in first place come May.
