Arsenal fans unhappy with Kallstrom arrival - Remember Flamini?

Flamini Warm Up

Can Kim Kallstrom be as important as Mathieu Flamini has since he returned to Arsenal in the summer?

Arsenal fans were probably left disappointed with the shutting of the January Transfer Window last night - as only one name arrived on Deadline Day … and it wasn’t a striker.

Aaron Ramsey’s six week lay-off was one thing - but with Mathieu Flamini suspended for three games, Jack Wilshere still needing to be treated carefully because of his fitness concerns and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain only recently returning from injury - a previously unexpected move for a midfielder took precedence over the clubs striker pursuit.

So they moved for Kim Kallstrom of Spartak Moscow.

Which left many a fan thoroughly unimpressed with the clubs dealings

Twitter erupted with talk of Championship Manager 2001-02, funny little quips and memes galore - nobody could quite believe that the out of favour Russian based 31-year-old was their final piece of the silverware winning jigsaw.

But, haven’t we been here before?

A ‘washed-up’ midfielder who had barely played in the last year that left fans flabbergasted when Arsenal confirmed his arrival?

Sounds a lot like Mathieu Flamini too me.

Arsenal snapped up the defensive midfielder in the summer - five years after he ditched the club to join AC Milan on a free transfer.

He spent the majority of his time in Italy on a treatment table with severe knee trouble. Considering the presence of to many injury prone players already in the Arsenal first-team, the addition of one more would always receive short shrift from some fans.

At the time it came in comparison with Tottenham - who had spent the past week snapping up Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and co … look how things have turned out.

Flamini has been a valuable asset for the club, despite nearly everyone mocking the decision to bring him back to Arsenal… myself included.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves - Kallstrom is here as a stop gap and the chances of him becoming a permanent fixture are second to none.

But he adds depth and options for Wenger in the final stretch - and he obviously feels this move is the right thing for the club.

The fans reacted angrily to the Flamini signing in the summer - and he has proven a valuable asset, Kallstrom might just do the same in time.
