Arsenal €10m summer target returns home after La Liga nightmare

Joshua Guilavogui, who was linked with a move to the Gunners in the summer, has left Atletico Madrid to return to Saint Etienne on loan.

One deal that flew under the radar slightly on transfer deadline day was Joshua Guilavogui’s return to Saint Etienne on loan.

The talented defensive midfielder made a €10 million switch from the Ligue 1 side to Atletico Madrid in the summer, but did not make a La Liga start for Diego Simeone’s men.

The 23-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Spanish capital city outfit, but has admitted that he is glad to have return to his boyhood club.

"I'm really happy to be back in Saint-Etienne,” he told the club’s official website.

“The club has made a very big effort. I take my hat off to Christophe Galtier, who has been instrumental in my coming back. ASSE is in heart. This is where I flourished.

“Upon my arrival, I found the love that I have always carried. This is a beautiful challenge. I am looking forward to my teammates and the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium with the new team.

“I want to make my contribution to the club. Even though I have not played as much as I hoped, I progressed in my first six months at Atletico."

Capped five times for France, Guilavogui has an outside chance of making Laurent Blanc’s World Cup squad.
